Beginner songwriting is a special place to be. If you don't already know it, you’re in a special group of people. Very few people write songs, let alone good or great songs.
Songwriting for beginners is an amazing mind set to be in. We see the world a little differently, watch emotions, listen to conversations and make note of song titles or ideas. Keep a note book and write ideas down.
Think about this and try to listen and watch people more often where ever you are. It’s a great source of ideas and gives a sense of how people talk to each in different situations.
I heard of a novel writer who spends time in hospital emergency waiting rooms to get ideas of how people talk and act when they are under stress. Sound weird? Find ideas where it best works for you and develop your own
songwriter methods.
The more you write songs the better you’ll get at it. This is very important in beginner songwriting. Write every day if you can. Write even if it’s just for ten minutes at a time. Anything you write is better than not writing.
Don’t be afraid to write crap. Even great writers write crap sometimes. Re-writing is when you polish. Writing crap is good because it gets you in the flow and gives you the chance to write through ten lines to find the one that is terrific.
