Sounds like you wrote a song and you went to the studio and sung it for Usher.

Based on your post I am not sure if you are trying to become a songwriter or an artist. Usher has his own label and he does sign artist. I will try to tell you what I know as a songwriter or songwriter/singer.

Songwriter:

No, you do not have to be the best singer to publish a song. If you can carry a note and sing the song the way its suppose to sound, that's all you need. Publishers are looking for the song itself and if it sounds like a hit. However, you don't want your demo to sound horrible. In other words you don't have to sound as good as Usher or other big name artist to publish your songs. But you want your song or demo to sound good enough for the publisher or artist to want to listen. Keep in mind the song is more important than vocals.

Artist/Songwriter:
No different. If you can sing, it is always good to dummy down your vocals. Dummy down: Try not to sing with a lot of bravado. Don't over sing the song. You don't want the demo to get to an artist and they feel they have to compete with your vocals. This could work against the songwriters that are trying to publish their songs or sell their songs to artist.

Additional info. If you are trying to break into the industry (songwriter, artist, or both) and are meeting Usher. I would recommend asking Usher's advice of ways to improve or perfect your craft. It doesn't hurt to ask if he would be interested in mentoring you as well. Learn as much as you can early, and build relationships. You never know who you are speaking with or who they may know. Use every opprotunity to your advantage.

Good luck.

Explain
by: Doc Haley

You have not detailed what you posted of yourself nor what you were taken to the recording studio for?

Publishing is different from being a song writer or a performing artist.

A publishing company is the link between your final product and an A&R or record label if they have the contacts.

If you sing or play or both and have posted yourself doing such online and have some positive feedback then it may be better to get a studio quality master of a few tunes.

Then if everything goes well for you, you'll need a publishing company if the record label does not have an in house one, and they do.

Anything they can do, to take from the author/artist will be done by them.

Try an Inde lable.
