Fishing For Oil

Fishing For Oil is a new song written by songwriters John Cowell and Alan Robb. John and Alan have been friends for years. Lowry Olafson and John have written several songs together and Lowry helped in producing this new song.

Fishing-for-oil was a lot of fun to write and came together in one evening with a couple of follow up rewrites of the last verse. It's written in AABA form and just seemed to best fit that format. It was written as an east coast folk song.

This song was written in the Cowell's living room. John attended a songwriting retreat with Lowry and Susann Richter several months later and it seemed natural they be involved in the recording.

The song was recorded at Strait Sound in Gibsons BC in Aug 2009. The recording was engineered and mixed by Ray Fulber.

Appearing on the recording is Jesse Cowell on lead vocals, Lowry Olafson on guitar, fiddle and chorus vocals, Susann Richter on accordian and chorus vocals, Paul Steenhuis on bass, Alan Robb on drums and chorus vocals and John Cowell on chorus vocals.

Strait Sound is located on a three acre ocean view rural property. So rural that a black bear wondered through the lower field during recording. Don't worry, the bear is a fixture in the area.

This is the first song Jesse has sung that was written by his dad. Interestingly we went into the studio planning to put harmony vocals in much more of the song. But when we listened to Jesse's vocal performance, decided to only to have two unison chorus' at the end of the song.
