Four thirty eight found me on the floor next to my bed, while a
notebook's empty pages dried up my palate. You said 'write me a song
I've got years of bad nights to forget.' So I took a break from
thinking and I got out my pen.

I was picking at which words might make you melt there in your chair,
while scratching the wooden floor around me to see if something's
there. After quite some time I took a long hard sullen stare, at my
trembling hands to understand the essence of their affair

To my surprise they told me there's nothing I could find dwelling in all
the words I knew and thought I hadn't tried. What I needed to know, I
wouldn't master in my mind. there's not much to show for a recycled
song sung twice

I left the house and left my drawing board in my room, took a deep
breath in and let it out, but it slipped right out of view. I knew just
what the problem was I let it out too soon, so I took in another and
hoped it'd follow suit

The streets were quite pale, I watched the streetlights flicker off
I walked beside a stray cat appeared to have been lost
I helped her find her family who appreciated the lines I crossed
But as I strode on down the block I realized my lonely loss

I followed my nose to a bakery just opening for the day, I walked in
and asked the baker why he wouldn't wait till eight.
He handed me a cookie and said I'm afraid there's no other way
For it takes so much time for my savory pastries to bake

But sir, I said, the ovens set on the lowest temperature
He smiled and said "there's something you need to learn,
"Its only patience that rewards to those who dream and yearn"
He handed me another cookie and went back to work

I walked back home in heady thought and yes, a little more naïve
But my heart felt something different my eyes just couldn't see
Now I'm sitting on my bed and wondering if it had been a dream
And I'm writing you this song so this story gets to breathe
And I'm writing you this song because I need you to believe
