Lance, this is an excellent question. If you are just writing lyrics and have no melodies I would consider registering them as you might any other piece of writing.

What many lyric writers do is try and find a collaborator to write music for their songs. This provides a completed song for the co-writers.

I thought your question deserved a fuller respond so I wrote a web page around copyrighting songs. Here is where to find it How to Copyright Songs.

You could also try using a service like www.digiprove.com - it's an online service which allows you to prove ownership of your songs - just go to the site and register your song(s) to get a time stamped certificate which proves you were in possession of the song at that moment in time. Do this before posting it online, sending it out to anyone etc. and you have proof that you created it. The great thing about digiprove is that you don't have to upload your song so you can be sure you're not giving anyone access to it.
