How Music Really Works is a terrific book and fun to read. I have studied with the author Wayne Chase and can't rave enough about the book or Wayne.

This book is the most complete and comprehensive book on songwriting on the market. It takes a very extensive look of the development of music and places it all in context of the abilities of the human mind. Wayne Chase, was involved in the music industry and songwriting some years ago. But what he achieves in writing this book is astounding. He is an original thinker and it shows up in the content and unique information contained in his book.

He has extracted the underlying components of what a great song is comprised of. Showing how the great writers put together their work. All this in an easy to understand way. Its quite an achievement, something that has never been done before.

Wayne's approach is totally different. He has done extensive research into the makeup of the greatest 5000 songs ever written. He then takes this research data and presents it in an easy to understand way. Using the data to illustrate what the the masters have done to write great songs.

When you read other songwriting books you will find some of the pieces of the songwriting puzzle. But you won't find a book that has as much in one place. I written songs using Wayne information and I'm always amazed at the totally different find of finished song I end up with.

The songs contain lyrics, melody and chords that I put together knowing how they work and why they work. Wayne tries to take the hit and miss out of writing great songs. By great songs he means songs that will stand the test of time. Like the ones he has analyzed.

Not every "hit song" is a "great song". The short term up and downs of the commercial market rewards songs that you will not likely hear much in 10 to 20 years. Wayne want to get you writing great songs that will stand on their own and not just chase the market.
