I was approached to writer for major placement, how should I handle this?
A guy called me from LA and he said he is looking for songwriters to write, and reference songs to his producers music for major placements. He has a close resources with Warner Bros, a major pop artist, and a label overseas. He sent me an email stating if songs are picked the songwriters will get full credit and a split on points. I forward the email to my lawyer and my lawyer responded saying I should not send any of my songs until we draw up contracts for situations like this.
This may be an opportunity to land second placement this year. My first placement is on a major movie (musical on big screen) this year. But I don't want to blow an opportunity by demanding too much or sell myself short by not demanding anything. I understand you have to crawl before you walk, but I also heard it isn't good to start your career letting people know they can walk all over you or use your songs for little to nothing.
I am assuming he means he would wants a percentage of my publishing when he says "split on points". Is this fair? Shouldn't he only take a percentage of his producer's publishing since I am the hired songwriter? I have done a little research on the producers he manages. They are undiscovered and I like their music a lot. I would love to collaborate with them but I want to to make sure my approach is right, and I clearly understand how situations like these work.
