John Cowell SongWriter & Webmaster

John Cowell - I'm a songwriter and webmaster of Great SongWriting.com. I was born in Prince George British Columbia and now lives in Victoria, BC Canada. I'm 57 years old, married to Jane Cowell and have one 21 year old son Jesse Cowell.

I was raised on a small farm in Salmon Arm BC and bought my first guitar for $20 at age 14 and wrote my first song 16. I soon traded that old beater in but it was just the start.

I worked for 15 years in the BC Public Service as a probation officer and family court counselor then for 15 years for the Province of BC as a treaty negotiator in the BC Treaty Commission process.

I'm now retired but still work part time as a contract negotiator in the aboriginal relations field. But my true passion is songwriting. Somehow its what I always feel comfortable doing. Even if re-writing can be hard work.

I've co-written songs with Roots Juno winner Ken Whiteley, Martyn Joseph and also with Lisa Aschmann and Lowry Olafson (Pier 21, and Stronger Than You'll Ever Know, both published and recorded by Lowry Olafson). My other other co-writers have included songwriters such as Bryan Fogelman, Neils Peterson and Jack Boomer.

Building the Great SongWriting website has been a long time dream of my and a labor of love. Its taken a lot of time and hard work but worth every second of it.
