Leavin' Her Tips Behind

by Rik Yerzik
(Salt Lake City, UT)

Writing this song was inspired by a conversation I had with a waitress at a 24 hour restaurant.. at 5 am in the morning. I couldn't sleep and my girlfriend and I went for an early morning walk and to get something to eat at an all night diner..

We got there and our waitress starting talking with us and we struck up a nice conversation and then it turned to relationships and how we looked like a nice couple and happy. Then she started spilling out her story and actually it was pretty touching.. because she lost that spark in her relationship and started asking how would you know to end something and start over.. when would you know.. she had been married for 24 years.. and her man couldnt' find work.. and she said all she sees is the tips the customers left behind..she said she was working long hours and it was getting hard to support both of them.... well.. I like the use of a double entendre went home and wrote the song..

I just knew I had to write about this waitress and the conversation.. it was a cool experience and amazing it only took about 15 minutes to pen the ideas.. I have tweaked it a little of the past few years and have it where I like it now to perform..

One good mentor told me a song like a piece of art is never finished.. it's just a work in progress.

Maybe this story will inspire some of you to be aware of daily life.. there are a lot of stories to tell even in simple things like a cup of coffee and waitess at 5 AM

It was kind of ironic to have the conversation with the waitress because my girl and I were in the middle of breaking up... we never told the waitress..didn't have the heart to tell her.. YIKES!!
