Leonard Cohen, while having celebrated early success in his career, is very similar to the persona of the Canadian independent singer. With his intense but uncomplicated song craft and almost European sensibility, Cohen could be considered a kind of “gothic poet” often combining themes of loneliness, death, and disillusionment with Biblical imagery. Early compositions tended to involve an acoustic guitar often accompanied with string arrangements and later incorporated various synthesized sounds.

Neil Young, singer-songwriter Canada born, is one of the more popular artists from the country and has distinguished a very individualistic catalog of music over the years. Broadly referred to as the “Godfather of Grunge”, Young joined thick distortion effects with simplistic yet unusual progressions, frequently using alternate tunings to shape a full-bodied sound. He frequently experimented with noise rock and extended improvised performances, integrating a heavy blues influence as well as a folk rock approach to singing and lyrical writing.
