Slang
Slang resources are found here, a dictionary gives you all you need to understand how it is new and used on the internet and also as it has developed in urban settings. Its use is an informal set of words or terms which define or describe objects or situations. Its an unofficial language that has not gained recognition by the formal dictionaries. It's an everyday evolving vocabulary that develops as short cut descriptions or expressions which have unique or novel meanings. They can be created by word combinations, abbreviations, acronyms and totally new words with meaning.
It can be regional in nature and can be localized to certain groups or subcultures in a society. It can be shortcuts or new words that blend existing concepts. A great example of it is the word slanguage. It this case it's very descriptive of the form its taking.Expressions can travel from their origin and start to be used by subcultures or groups. Often these groups see the use of these terms as establishing a person’s membership or identification with a group.
Some words are converted into mainstream language leaving the group who started to use them needing to invent new words that are associated with the group’s identity. Some words get immortalized through the mass media. It’s tough to keep up so dictionaries define these evolving words. There are several out there to consider if you want to keep current or write songs directed at certain groups of to present an atmosphere a group will identify with or understand. Here are a collection of related books if you're interested in buying one. Also here is The Online Dictionary A collaborative project of the global dictionary of it that you help create. I also have a section on a Hip Hop Dictionary and an Urban Dictionary that you can look at.
