The popularity of different structures has changed over the history of songwriting. Structure is a good thing because it organizes your song into a format that has been tried and tested thousands of times.

These structures work because they organize a song so the listener can hear it better and so lead to better chance at songwriting success.

Don’t get caught up in thinking “I’m unique so I don’t have to follow structure”. You already are unique and that has nothing to do with song structure.

When you’re starting out, structure can only help you. Play with structure after you’ve written 200 songs.

Song structure is like the frame in your house. Only it supports your ideas, lyrics and music. They all have to work together and complement each other. If one breaks down so does the song.

A basic songwriting tip is keep your melodies simple and try to make them catchy. The melody in your verses should be the same. The melody in the choruses should be the same. I suggest reading the section melody structure.

Make sure you song title or "hook" is at the start or end of the chorus and that its melody stands out. The title is the theme the song hangs onto. Look at every line you write to make sure it supports your title.

The structure of your first verse lyrics have to match the structure of the second verse lyrics. Listeners expect and need this song writing easy structure. If you don’t give it to them they will lose focus in your song.

Usually the lyrics in the choruses are the same. Stay with this when you are starting out. It’s more important for you to master this with practice and more practice. There’s lots of time later to learn when they can be changed.

The bridge should be different than the rest of the song both in music and content. After the listener has heard two verses and two choruses they usually need a short break before heading back into the familiar chorus.

Stick to this songwriting easy structure and you listeners will reward you by staying interested in your song.
