Songwriting Habits - Be Clear

Songwriting habits need to catch your songwriting inspiration when composing songs. Learn how to compose songs that are clear. It will help when you're writing songs.

Have you ever been in a state where you write songs that don’t seem to improve? This can happen, without some basic principles we wander around aimlessly reading songwriting books and web pages, listening to songwriting gurus and buying whatever is out there. All the time hoping the next technique is the golden answer to writing a hit.

We fork out our hard earned money on courses, tips, secrets and tools. It's like we have some sort of a dysfunction or we’re cursed where many of the things we try never seem to quite work. We leave a trail of songs that are never quite finished or just don’t hold together and we never quite know why.

Ever blamed the listener for not getting your song? Ever blamed someone who has questioned what you mean in a song? Ever said people don’t “get me” or that they “just don’t get my song”?

I know I’ve caught myself doing this. A song is a very personal thing and it hurts when someone doesn’t seem to understand our creation or “baby”. Songs are mini worlds that we create and we feel responsible for them.

We can’t expect that everyone will like or enjoy the songs we write. But if someone doesn’t get something in our songs how is blaming them going to help? Doesn’t it make more sense to look at how we can be clearer in what we write?

So check your assumptions and engage the listener and develop a strong songwriting principle.

Reading Wayne Chase’s book How Music Really Works was the thing that caused the light to go on for me. That’s when I started to see the big picture and things started to fall into place.

Instead of having a collection of techniques or road signs I began to see the road map and develop the songwriting habit of always trying to think about how to connect with the listener. Websites can help you learn these skills.
