Songwriting Ideas

Songwriting ideas are everywhere if you search for them. They are in what your friends, bartender and co-workers are saying. The secret is to train yourself to think like a songwriter. Here's how.

Five steps to finding great ideas for your songs.

1. Keep a journal, notebook, file, record it on mini recorder of your cell phone, or email yourself. just record what you hear when it happens. It's important that you write it down immediately, because chances are you will forget.

2. When you hear the words, also write down the context you heard it in and why it seemed like a good concept. Try to add a one sentence summary of the concept around the song you thought might be possible.

If you don't forget take this extra step, even though you might remember the actual words or phrase, you might forget the context that made it seem like the makings of good songwriting ideas.

3. Listen to what the emotion is behind what people are saying in conversations. Many times the words they say come to life because of the emotion that drove them to make the statement in the first place. Try to write down what was going on. Find the passion behind the words. It might be a simple emotion that many other people can relate to. Maybe you can help others relate to it in the song you write.

4. Think like a songwriter. This may sound too simple, but its not. Go into conversations with your songwriter ears and eyes wide open. The mere fact that you take something to write or record words on can help put you in this frame of mind.

Take an interest in conversations and pay attention to what people are saying. Make sure you listen to everything and if it seems to spark something for you save it.

5. Use what you record as your "well" for inspiration. You may never use everything you save. But every song needs an exceptional idea to make it fly. Its exceptional ideas that make great songs stand out. It can be as simple as saying a very common thing in a new and unique way.

6. Here's a bonus point. If you regularly compile your songs ideas this way it can be your saviour if you find yourself with writer's block. Go back to your idea well and use that for inspiration. It will take you back to the day you wrote down the idea.

Think about why its seemed a strong concept. Put yourself in that same head space. Even if you don't find the makings of great songwriting ideas in the list, it might get you into a head space where your writing begins to flow.
