SongWriting Methods - Personal Style

Songwriting methods can vary greatly. Ask yourself, why are you writing and who are you trying to reach? Songwriting style and intent varies so it's ok to write only for yourself and no one else has to hear your songs.

However, most people's songwriting approach is to write songs to communicate emotion and experiences with others. Some want to learn how to write commercially successfully songs. That’s ok too. There’s lots of room in the world for everyone’s songs. More great songs are a good thing.

Creative songwriting needs to be nurtured. When you are writing think about who you are trying to reach and what you have to say to them. Try to find ways to write lyrics and music that are interesting and unique.

The idea is to connect emotionally with the listener. There are songwriting fundamentals and tools to do this that can make you stand out as a songwriter. They take practice but you can learn them. This may sound strange now but with time you’ll see it’s true.

One of the most important things is to speak from your own personal voice. You are totally unique in the world. No one has the experiences you have, not even the greatest songwriters ever.

Your journey is to find your voice. Don't try to be Bruce Springsteen or Dianna Warren. We’d all love to be great songwriters like them but they'll never be able to write what you have the potential to write.

You’re different and your songwriting methods are different, that’s a good thing. So don't worry, there is plenty of room for more great songwriters and great songs. Many people argue there aren’t enough great songs out there.
