Listeners have no particular reason to be interested in our songs. Its our job as songwriters to reach out to them and draw them in.

The reality is unless you write to include listeners, why should they care about how we're feeling or about what we have to say. They certainly don't want to hear us whine or preach to them.

Here are several techniques to bring them in. Think about who you are writing to. In todays world of radio driven hits the you need to speak directly to the listener and especially to women.

Women are your target, you must get through to them. This often means framing your lyrics so they aren't put off side and usually it means including the word "you" in you lyrics.

The listener has to feel you are talking directly to them personally. That your song is written specifically and directly to them. It needs to feel like it is about their life, their pain, their happiness and their memory.

They have to feel your song is their song and that you somehow knew exactly what they were feeling and doing. We all have memories of special songs which have been linked to special times in our lives. Couples call them "our song". You have to create this experience in the listener with your song.

When we write as if its a conversation listeners will feel you're speaking to them personally. You can frame what you say so any lessons you want them to learn are examples of someones elses life.

This allows the listener to get as close to your issue as they are comfortable with. They can't be pressured to feel anything because they will likely end up resenting what you are saying if they feel manipulated. Thats when you lose them.

Use humor and irony to get the listener to hear what you have to say. Let them learn by example especially if it is a serious topic. We need to lead listeners not march them.

Think about this as you are planning out your song. The songwriting skill is to always ask "what's in it for the listener?"
