Your SongWriting Can be Great

Your songwriting can be improved with help, inspiration, tools and hard work. This is true for beginners and advanced writers.

This website is set up so we work together in your song writing. Don't expect to write great songs overnight, but use it as a process of writing stronger and stronger songs.

Some pieces of information can change your writing forever. I still remember the first time it happened to me. A moment of inspiration from a

Pat Pattison songwriting lesson on rhyming that lit up me up like a light bulb. Moments like that can and will happen for you with the information we provide. When it does, please fill in that story or others my may have in the comments form below and I will publish it on this site.

You should ask yourself these questions. Why are you writing songs? Who are you writing for? Why are you unique? This all leads to who you are as a songwriter and why there is no one in this world like you.

Finding your own voice as a songwriter is hard if you don't know where to look. We'll help you turn over a few rocks. You might be surprised what you find.

Creative ideas are a songwriter's pot of gold. There are techniques for mining ideas. Object writing is one great way to do this. Writing song outlines is another. Writing from a thesaurus and building phrases and sentences also produces amazing results.

Where do you start, lyrics or melody or a lick and what are the secrets to writing lyrics to an existing melody? There are no correct answers but the more you practice them all the better you are at songwriting.

Lets talk about the bones of the song like song structure, and the 6 greatest song writing structures, color the chorus verse, bridge, hook, title and writing to a title. However we can't stop there, we need to consider meter, tempo, beats and stress and rhythm.

Want your song to be different than 90% of the songs out there? Try deciding on tempo, rhythm, meter and stressed beats before you start.

Next comes lyrics, rhyme, melody, melody structure, sectional differences, and building and resolving tension and the guideline of "twos". Ever written a song in a minor key? No? Neither have most other songwriters. Try it and your song will stand out.

Show don't tell is a guideline that you can master. Loading your songs with action verbs and power nouns, and asking questions will let you play with the "big boy" tunesmiths. It's very simple to do yet only the pros seem to do it. Why is that? We'll show you how to do it too.

Be specific, be specific, be specific. Set your song in a specific time (high noon), place (sucker street, Nowhereville), location (Holiday Inn lounge), and setting (under a mahogany fan). Thats another guideline to make your songs candy to your listeners. It will also help your song's lyrics tower over other songs.

How about the dreaded "rewriting". Ever duck out on that and say the song is good enough when you know its not. Good habits are worth forming.

Promise yourself not to sell yourself or your song short. Great songwriting often comes from a series of tiny improvements that have a multiplying effect. Check this out if you need to deal with writer's block.

Ralph Murphy from ASCAP has interesting things to say about what hits have in common. I've included a section on writing a song from Ralph's list. Also included are sections on writing songs with women in mind and how to invite listeners into your songs.
