Turn Poetry into songs - Is there anyway?

I've always been interested in poetry, and i love the sound of music, whether it's instrumental or it has words. I have many poems written down that i believe that could be turned into really pretty songs, if I could figure out how to make it into a song, while making it sound right. I have attempted it, and it sounded ok, but I believe that it could sound MUCH better if I knew exactly what I was doing. Is there anyway that you may be able to help me? Or maybe give me some advice on how exactly to make them into songs?
