I retired this year and now I work at home and I'm my own boss. Well, not exactly. I have a flexible two day a week contract but I work from home at that too.

The rest of my time is free for running this website and songwriting. Well that’s also not exactly true because I also now have more time to spend with my family. Although they aren’t my boss, well maybe they are. However I get to choose them as my boss and that feels good. Do you get to choose who your boss is?

I spent a long time waiting to start to work at home, be my own boss and get out of the rut of going to the office. Although I must say I was lucky enough to have jobs that I loved most of my life.

But you know what, they were still jobs. I never felt I was in control of doing exactly what I wanted to do. But now that’s different.

A few weeks ago I went and spent a week in Nashville and stayed at a wonderful place right on Music Row. Going to Nashville is like getting a ticket to songwriter's heaven.

For anyone who is interested I was at the Longhorn Steakhouse (where all the songwriters, stars and record executives used to hang out) the day it closed. Its being turned into a pizza place. There were a lot of long faces at the longhorn.

Yesterday I took the day to buy new deck furniture and power wash our driveway. I also got to spend some time talking to the neighbors about their yards.

I choose to drive my son to university most mornings. Not because I have to or that he couldn’t get there on his own. I do it because I want to and we get to send one on one time together.

I do all these things I enjoy on weekdays because I work from home and I’m in control of what I do and when. I ask myself (my boss) if it’s ok and I always says yes. Very Cool!

Boy! Who Hasn’t?

This is how I made my current reality out of my dream to work from home for myself. I suppose I'm lucky because I have a pension to back me up. But you know what? I’m also not as young as I used to be. I spent a lot of years doing what other people wanted me too.

I’ve got to admit, time sneaked up on me. So I made the commitment, I retired early. So here I am in my housecoat writing this because I work from home. Did I mention my boss also allows me to wear whatever I want to work?

This is my first website so here’s a down-to-earth account of how this web site came out of my dream and onto the internet. It appeared like magic, well not quite, it took a lot of work as well. But its magic to me to see how well it’s working and how many people are visiting the site I’ve created.

The other amazing part is that it’s really fun. Each day I can’t wait to work on my site. It’s kind of like writing a song. It feels like my baby that I have to nurture but once the search engines start to take over it finds a life of its own.

Every day I watch my site’s rankings in the search engines climb and climb and watch my traffic increase, all because I work from home. SBI has played such a great part making it happen.

None of these things happen by chance. But with hard work that I love doing, I’m making it happen. My website gets all its traffic free from the search engines. It’s based on writing content that people and search engines are interested in.

Your know what. This is actual proof that what I’m telling you WORKs. If I can do it and work from home. So can you. All you need is a computer, access to the internet and the right kind of help.

Did I mention that I did all of this for under $1000? I chose to list my site with the Yahoo and Business directories and that was $500 of the $1000. So actually I could have done it for $500. That’s all it will cost me for an entire work from home year of operation.

In the first four months of operation my website had about 10,000 visits. Again all of those were free from the internet. I don’t buy pay per click or buy hits from all those websites out there who drive me crazy with pop-up, pop-unders and whatever else.

This may sound funny but I know that if I can do this and build a successful website business that I work from home, SO CAN YOU!

My Dreams Came True When I Took Action! You Can Take Action Too!

It meant developing a plan, starting to put it into the real world, sticking with it and not letting anything or anyone tell me that it couldn't be done. Site Build It helped me all the way on this journey.

The fact that I had never built a web site before and yet managed to do it is only part of the story. For me it was about creating something that I had always wanted. It was making it feel real in my hands, my brain and on my computer monitor.

I’m not finished building the site yet but I know what to do and when to do it. Having a plan that I can see working takes all the stress out of it.

My day job used to take me away from home a lot. In fact there was a time I was on the road for the majority of a full year. The work I was doing was incredibly exciting, stressful and interesting.

However I missed almost an entire year of watching my son grow up. At the end of that year it also took me three full weeks of vacation to get over the mental and physical exhaustion. I sent more time getting over working too hard than vacationing.

My wife, who also worked full time in a stressful job, had to shoulder all the responsibility of doing all the work at home. I decided I’d never be away that much again. As things worked out I managed to get it down to an average of two days a week away from home.

That’s when I knew there had to be a better way! I knew I just had to find a way to work from home.

I had these little daydreams of creating my own work at home job where I could be in control to do what I wanted when I wanted. If I felt like spending the morning to write a song I would do it. If I felt like going for a walk I would just do it. Does that desire sound familiar to you?

Everywhere I look on the internet there are get rich right now schemes that seem glossy, tempting and too good to be true. I tried a few of them and yep, they were all too good to be true.

But in my heart I knew I wanted to do something that was meaningful to me. I wanted personal rewards more than just making money. I’ve always wanted that in my life.

Call me crazy but I wanted to hold my head up and say what I was doing was real, worthwhile and something that I would do anyway regardless of whether I got rich at it. Earning a good living from it would be great but I wanted to be proud of what I was doing. You can probably tell that I'm proud of this website.

I don’t remember exactly how I bumped into the Site Build It website. I think I was on a website and saw the logo banner at the bottom of the page and clicked on it. What I do remember is spending the next three hours that evening reading about SBI. Over the next week I spent some time every day reading more and more about it.

What I found so intriguing was it seemed like it was a total package that I could do and maybe it was the answer to let me work from home. And SBI was clear up front that it would take a lot of effort on my part.

I wasn’t afraid of the work, I was more afraid of doing all that work and finding out that it didn’t work or was a waste of time. I was afraid of failing and having to admit it to my family and friends. The other thing I loved about SBI was its online software package that's flexible and yet easy to master.

I’d purchased a cheap $3.95/month web package before. There was no real way to learn how to start from scratch. Once I got my account and signed in I was left wondering, OK what now? There I was already to work from home and I wasn't sure what to do, how to work the web site's administration panel, where to start or how to get people to my site. I certainly never had any kind of blueprint or business plan.

I needed all kinds of other programs and help to make it work. This meant that my dream web business to work from home never got off the ground. To me it was worth exactly what I had paid for it. Mostly nothing!

Not so with Site Build It. Yes I had to invest a few hundred dollars. At the time it looked like it was more money than I had to pay elsewhere. But I started looking at what SBI provided and realized that it was my all in price. It’s the total all-in-one package that sold me.

That’s when I knew it was the right package for me. I was worried I might be making a mistake but I swallowed hard, took the leap and signed up. I’ve got to say that once I signed up I was impatient to get up and running. But I had made myself this promise. I would follow the suggestions by SBI on what to do and when.

So I spent the first two weeks reading and doing research under SBI’s guidance. I read and listened to the series of tutorials twice. Once quickly and the second time I read every word SBI suggested. The tutorials were unbelievably helpful. I've never seen anything like them for detail on what to do.

On the third time through I started to do the work of the tutorials and started building my plan for my website. At the end I knew what I wanted to do, what my niche was and how to build a blueprint for my website that would let me work from home.

The secret SBI used was to show me how to write well and write content that people want to read. Using words that speak to them personally and to put them in a state of mind to trust me. This pre-sells them so they're willing to buy from me.

It wasn’t about learning a bunch of technical web building nerdy stuff. I’ve got to admit I was hooked on the simple and powerful technique that is set out. I couldn’t wait to try it.

The other part of SBI that really made me stand up and notice was the forums for support that are set up. On every step of the tutorial there was a forum of people who talked about the issues I was working on. These were experienced SBI owners who were my friendly support group.

As well Dr Ken Evoy, the owner of SBI interacts in the forums and also sends out a consolidated newsletter weekly for the topics that people are working on.

The incredible free book he’s written is called Make Your Site Sell! Its a classic for selling on the internet. It showed me what to do to build a website that has the impact of selling to website visitors. It’s simple to read and had me turning out quality writing in no time.

On its web site Site Build It! (SBI!) talks about itself as an all-in-one site-building, site-hosting, site-promoting suite of these tools. It says it turns the confusing technical website work into a do-able process of writing content pages on your website so you can achieve success. From what I've seen, their claim is true.

That’s how I set myself up to work at home successfully. For me it did exactly what it promised and more. Boy was it worth the money.

I started on planning my site a month before I left my job and started writing the pages two weeks before I left. I knew immediately it was a smart decision. I was even surer when after two weeks I started to get web traffic even though I only had 15 web pages up and running.

It was only a week after my home page was uploaded that I got the thrill of my internet life time. I did a search on Google and my homepage came up as the sixth listing on the first page of Google for the keyword - great songwriting.

That’s when I knew Ken Evoy and SBI were the real thing and what SBI was saying worked. I work from home now and haven’t looked back since.

I did all of this by following the SBI Action Guide. It’s a written and audio ebook with ten chapters organized to walk you through the entire process. Finding an idea and then researching its profitability. I knew I wanted to write a songwriting website and prayed that the research would prove it was a profitable niche.

I found this is where SBI dwarfs other web site building packages. It has a full set of integrated tools that let me do research into what keywords had high demand and high profitability.

It built a list for me of over 500 keywords that people were searching for and also indicated how many sites there were already providing information on those keywords.

SBI also provided some guidelines on how to interpret the data to know how many good keywords would be enough to make my site profitable. It shines a bright light on which keywords will likely outperform many others. It turned out songwriting was profitable, so off I went building the site as SBI suggested.

One of the wonderful things SBI advised me was, if I wanted to work from home on the web I should write about something I knew, loved and had expertise in. For me, I decided 6 years ago that I was going to try and make my songs as commercial as possible and try to get a song recorded by a major record company. (To date I've had three independent cuts but none from a major label)

As part of my commitment I set out a multi-year plan which involved taking as many songwriting workshops and courses as I could afford. The other promise was to take the courses from hit songwriters.

I realized this learning process was important to me in choosing a website because I learned a terrific amount about songwriting. Information I could use on the web site. It was a natural fit for me.

I still needed to do research on a whole variety of topics to write the content for the site. However the SBI website building tools are so simple to use I didn’t need many technical skills to build the website. It uses a building block method that is dead simple.

All I had to do was stack blocks. I must admit I became excited every morning to go and look at SBI site central and see my traffic stats and search engine rankings. I found the set up of their site very simple to use and understand.

Not only was I already a songwriting addict but I became a SBI and Great SongWriting addict. It was, and still is fun to work from home on the site and watch it grow day by day.

Part of the beauty of SBI was it forced me to think of ways that the site could make money before I even started building it. As in many sites there are at least two main ways to earn income.

Using Google ads, those are the links you can click on in the middle of all the website’s pages. The other was marketing affiliate programs such as songwriting ebooks etc. A couple of other was are to sell hard goods or personal services.

Affiliate marketing is all over the internet. If you don’t know what affiliate marketing is, this is an explanation of Affiliate Marketing.

Basically the goal is to get as much traffic to my website as possible by using keywords many people are searching for. While at the same time having a short supply of websites that are providing the content those searchers are seeking.

Some of the people who visit my website for the content will also click on the links to my affiliate programs or Google ads. That provides me with an income source when I work from home.

At the time of writing this my Alexa traffic ranking is 916,00 and dropping every month. Alexa is a tracking website you can sign up for. (The smaller the ranking number the better, it means I have increased traffic. I started out with a ranking of eight million).

My current ranking puts my site’s traffic in the top 1% of all the sites on the internet after only six months of operation. Highly ranked, exactly as SBI said it could be if I followed their plan.

Last month I received about 11,000 visits to my website. All of those have been through the search engines and all for free. I don’t use pay-per-click or email campaigns.

Song writing is not exactly a niche that overall gets huge traffic, but its what I love. Am I getting rich today? No, but as my traffic builds so do my commissions and sales. And, I am my own work from home boss!

When I start my next site, and its when not if, I know I will be able to build another successful SBI site. I'm busy doing the research now. Again the SBI tools really are helping me focus in in the most profitable keywords and concepts.
