Write lyrics and use balance and unbalanced number of lines or line length in your verse and chorus. Writelyrics that lift your songwriting and make you song stand out because people are hooked on it.
Writing great lyrics require you to think about your listener and how to keep them glued to your lyric as they listen to your song.
Theres a sensitive balance you must achieve to keep them interested and emotionally involved in your lyric while not loosing them because there isn't enough balance for the topic you are writing.
Some songs need a great deal of balance and some need to make the listener feel uneasy. These must match what you want your listener to feel. Ask yourself what you want your listener to feel.
If you want them to feel unbalanced in a certain part of your song or on in your song in general then varying the number of lines is a tool you can use.
Your line length is balanced if it has an even number of lines, i.e four lines. Unbalanced if there are an odd number of lines, i.e. five lines.
You might wonder, how can a listener tell? Well they might not consciously know but it will have an unconscious affect on them. Many of the things you do in a song work on very subtle levels.
Listeners just listen, they don't think about how you the songwriter are purposely applying your craft to reach them. Verses and chorus that have odd or uneven line numbers do impact listers so use this as a tool to help you song make your listeners feel uneasy or comfortable when you want them to.
You don't have to leave them hanging out there forever because all listeners want to feel balanced at some point in song. When your write lyrics you can make the number of lines in your verse and chorus both have odd or even or have one odd and the other even. Again it depends on how you want your listener to feel in any part of your song.
People have been listening to music all their lives and great songwriters have been using this technique to reach them. Listeners just haven't thought about it, nor should they have to. But they want to feel something and connect with your song. So help them out.
If you want your verse or chorus to have a rock solid and happy feeling then only use an even number of lines. If your want you listener to feel unsure, sad or leave them wondering, then write lyrics that have an uneven number of lines.
