Writing Song by Ralphs List
Writing song by Ralph Murphy's list for song composers will help your songwritings because his song techniques help. Here is how to use his checklist for the composer and songwriter and plan your song. It can help you learn how to write rock music or any other kind of music. - What tempo should your song be?
- Do you want to use humor, irony, satire and have it heartfelt?
- What timing should you write in, 4/4, 3/4, 6/8 etc?
- How contemporary should your song sound? Do some research!
- How engaging is your song's story and how conversational will it be?
- Will you tell your story from 1st person or 2nd person?
- What song form will your song be in? (Verse-Chorus etc.)
- What's your melody structure, is it linear, will the chorus soar?
- How long of an intro do you want? (Generally short is better)
The message in this is, plan your song in advance! Play with all these variables to see what of an impact they have when you write a song. There are different points of view on this what makes a hit verses a great song. For example Wayne Chase in How Music Really Works has done extensive research into what makes a great song. Not just a hit song, but what do the songs that have stood the test of time have in common. Wayne's results are slightly different than Ralph's results. You can also write songs with women in mind. and invite your listeners into your song.
